The Warning ā€˜Keep Me Fedā€™

1824 Press Conference

June 2024

My question for them was about the music video for their single "QuĆ© MĆ”s Quieres." I wanted to know who or what inspired the visuals, which, for those who havenā€™t seen it, features a chaotic wedding scene, to put it mildly. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that Paulina co-directed the music video, which she described as her "brainchild." "It was so fun to make, from planning to directing my sisters. It was something new for us, and I loved it," she said.

A couple of weeks ago, I had the pleasure of asking The Warning a few questions during their 1824 press conference. Throughout the allotted hour, The Warning provided honest insights into their upcoming album, Keep Me Fed, how they have navigated the music industry as women, the balancing act of fueling creativity while also touring as much as possible, and much more. For those of you who arenā€™t familiar with this ever-inspiring powerhouse sister trio from Monterrey, Mexico, the band consists of sisters Daniela ā€œDanyā€ (guitar, lead vocals, piano), Paulina ā€œPauā€ (drums, vocals, piano), and Alejandra ā€œAleā€ Villarreal (bass, piano, backing vocals). They got their start in 2014 after 12-year-old Paulina was featured in a publication dedicated to female drummers. Soon after, they gained further attention from a YouTube video of their performance of Metallica's "Enter Sandman" that went viral, amassing over 20 million views. At the time, the sisters were between the ages of 9 and 14ā€¦

Reflecting on their early rise to fame, The Warning admitted they didn't fully grasp what was happening at the time. "We were so young and just riding a wave of good fortune. We're grateful we got to do this together as sisters. Those experiences over the past 10 years have helped us grow and set a foundation for what we want to do now," they noted. In their years of working as professional musicians, they have had the opportunity to work with iconic groups like Metallica and The Pretty Reckless. "It's amazing, and we're super grateful for those opportunities. It means the world to us," they expressed. Their upcoming album, Keep Me Fed, is set to release on June 28th. They currently have a countdown clock on their Spotify page, which fans have been eagerly watching in anticipation. When asked about the meaning behind the title Keep Me Fed, The Warning explained that it reflects the constant cycle of consumption in our lives. "It's about the need we all have to keep being fed, whether it be entertainment, social media, or anything else we consume. We participate in this cycle, feeding our fans and feeding on what others do. It's a never-ending cycle," the band shared.

Paulina explained that she loved the entire process, from planning and attending art and production meetings to scouting locations and directing her sisters. She highlighted the novelty of having such a strong narrative drive the video and the fun they had bringing it to life.

So far, six of the twelve tracks have been released: ā€™S!CKā€™, ā€˜QuĆ© MĆ”s Quieres,ā€™ ā€œMORE,ā€ ā€œBurnout,ā€ ā€œHell You Call A Dream,ā€ and ā€œAutomatic Sun.ā€ One participant of the press conference remarked how incredible ā€œAutomatic Sunā€ is and wanted to know the inspiration behind it. The sisters shared that it was the last song they wrote for the record, born from a phrase they couldn't shake. "It's about missing someone and craving their energy. It's personally my favorite song on the album, and playing it live is so much fun," they noted. One thing they shared that I personally found fascinating was the hectic time during which they made Keep Me Fed. They shared, ā€œFor this album, we were working with new people every single day. We were meeting new people, collecting experiences, different tastes, and different cultures. And to have that just really opened up so many possibilities of what we could do with our sound. And I feel like you hear it in every songā€”that different influence that each person had, and how we turn that into, like, ourselves. It still sounds like The Warning, but it is just something new. And I feel like that's what music is about. It's about evolving and exploring new things. And to have done it in such a hectic timeā€”it was in between toursā€”and we were really tired. We would write three songs, record those three songs, write more, and then leave for tour. Like, I recorded drums for the whole album in a day and a half. We had no time to do anything, and we just kind of made it work. [This album] really encapsulates what we were living in at that time.ā€

As they gear up for a busy summer festival season, including appearances at Mad Cool Festival, Aftershock, and Rocklahoma, The Warning revealed their pre-show rituals. "We stretch a lot because we jump and move around a lot. Our mom says a quick prayer, we set our intentions, and then we go into the show.ā€ They also mentioned that they love and are always excited to play in the U.S. for several reasons, with the most notable one being the gas stations. Apparently, gas stations in the U.S. are an experience in and of themselves, which definitely made me reevaluate my own perception of them as I viewed the experience from their eyes.

Lastly, I think everyone was wondering how they have been able to work with family so successfully for so many years. They remarked, ā€œWe work creatively as sisters, and our whole team feels like a family. This helps us communicate effectively and stay grounded.ā€ Overall, it was an incredible experience learning more about this immensely talented band, and I left the press conference all the more excited for their album to finally be out. Stay tuned for a full album review!
